News from Action for Children
Educational Outcomes
of Children Referred to Social Care
|
In
August, Action for Children published
research which reveals wide school
attainment gaps for children with a
social care referral.
There is widespread political consensus
on the importance of boosting school
attainment. However, a growing number
of children are facing challenges at
home that can hold them back and
prevent them from achieving their
potential in the classroom.
The research found:
- Between 2019 and 2021, children with
a social care referral were more than
twice as likely to fail their English
or Maths GCSEs than children without a
social care referral.
- Children who didn’t get support
the first time they were referred to
social care had significantly worse
GCSE outcomes than those who got
support the first time they were
referred, and those that never got
support at all.
- 58% of children in our cohort with a
social care referral were persistently
absent at some point in their school
career.
- 31% of children with a referral were
suspended from school at some point,
and 3% were permanently excluded.
Action for Children are using the
research to highlight the need for both
the government and opposition parties
to commit to rolling out family help
services across all local authorities
in England beyond 2025, as was
recommended by the Independent Review
of Children’s Social Care.
You can find the full research report
on The Action for Children website.

the research written by Action for

Advice and
support as children head back to school
|
The
stress of exam results, the cost of
school uniforms and the emotions
associated with going back to school
are just some of the things that
families cope with as the summer
holidays come to an end and a new
school year dawns. Our online support
service, Parent Talk, can help with
advice about these and a variety of
other parenting questions. Find support
here.
Read a blog about supporting children
as they prepare to head back to school here.

Over
the summer, our Methodist supporters
have been busy fundraising and
providing entertainment for their local
communities. As always this has been in
varied form from the Rock Choir at
Paisley Methodist Church to a flower
arranging event at the Vale of Stour
Methodist Circuit. Thank you to each
and every one of you who have supported
us this season.

Advent and Lent Courses
We write to commend to you the London District’s Advent and Lent
course booklets, created and produced as part of the District’s
theme for 2019-2022. The theme ‘Woven: God’s
Story. Your Story. Every Story.’ centred on
the power of storytelling to transform and renew us in our
lifelong discipleship as followers of Christ.
During these three years, the District produced a number of
resources which include our Advent and Lent course, both of which
are suitable for small groups and individual study. We have several
copies of both booklets available and would like to offer them to
our colleagues across the Connexion who may not have engaged with
the material previously.
Watching
and Waiting: a four-week Advent course that
encourages us to engage in mission and discipleship as a way of
life.
Woven:
A Lent Course: a six-week course written by
former District Chair and President of the Methodist Conference
(2018/19) Revd Michaela Youngson, reflecting on our personal
relationship with God and our responsibility as Christian’s to
engage with the world as it is.
The booklets are free to order and there is no charge for postage
and packaging. Please do note that although the booklets are
dated 2020, the content is not specific to any particular year
and can be used at any time.
The booklets are available to order via the link below and will
be sent out within 4 working days of receiving your order.

The Synod meeting on September 9th in Sutton Coldfield will be
invited to vote “in principle” on whether to take a further step
forward in bringing together our District with the West Midlands
District from September 2025. Please note that this is not
the final step and the matter will be brought to Circuit Meetings
if the September vote is in favour.
Synod members will be receiving their papers in the next 48
hours. But in order to raise awareness about these
proposals more widely, a video and handout have been prepared.
The video can be found here: https://youtu.be/dmxoKjRv0Mg
The group that is working on this is very happy to receive
comments and questions, preferably through the District Chair.
